Session I

Famous Artist Study - Monet


Oscar-Claude Monet was a founder of French Impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein-air landscape painting. In this class we will study the life and work of Monet and create a paintings in the impressionist style.

Drawing - one and two point perspective
Perspective Drawing is a technique used to represent three-dimensional images on a two-dimensional picture plane. Perspective was developed in the 15th century by the architects, Leon Baptista Alberti (1404-72) and Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446). We will learn how to use one and two point perspective to make our drawings look more realistic and accurate.

Storybook Art

In this class we will read children's books and discuss the illustrations inside. We will use the illustrators style and/or the story to inspire one of a kind illustrations of our own. We will work on learning art vocabulary and practice using it as we participate in talking about each other's creations.

Session II

Famous Artist Study - Jasper Johns
Jasper Johns was an American artist that came onto the scene in the 1950s. Much of the work that he created led the American public away from the expressionism form, and towards an art movement or form known as the concrete. He would depict many flags and maps, and this created a more distinct style with the work that was being done during this period in American art history. We will pattern our project after the work of Jasper Johns by experimenting with multimedia layers, typography, and symbols.

Drawing - Landscape drawing

We will use pencil and pen and ink in this class. We will learn about composition in drawing, atmospheric perspective and details on how to draw trees, clouds, water, etc.

Session III

Famous Artist Study - Paul Klee

Paul Klee, a Swiss-born painter, printmaker and draughtsman of German nationality, was originally associated with the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter, and subsequently taught at the Bauhaus, the widely influential German art school of the interwar period. Klee's diverse body of work cannot, however, be categorized according to any single artistic movement, or "school." His paintings, which are at times fantastic, childlike, or otherwise witty, served as an inspiration to the New York School, as well as many other artists of the 20th century. We will learn about Klee's life and art and create a painting inspired by what we learn.

Illustrator Study - Megan Coyle
Megan Coyle is a collage artist and illustrator who currently resides in the Washington, D.C. area. She creates collages entirely from magazine strips with a process that she calls “painting with paper.” We will look at some of her illustrations and watch a video about her process. Students will paint with paper to create their own image.

Landscape Watercolor

In this class we will review some basic watercolor techniques and work on a series of landscape studies meant to teach color washes, color layering, lifts and much more. Bring yourself, a friend, a spouse, or a teen and have some fun as we work together step by step.

Bookmaking
In this class we will be creating a book as well as the story and illustrations to go inside. We will do some painting, drawing, writing and, of course, book making! Come and learn how to make a surprise ending book that you can duplicate on your own all summer long to document your adventures!

Famous Artist Study- Alexander Calder
With a degree in mechanical engineering and a passion for the arts, Alexander Calder experimented with Kinetic art through the creation of two different types of sculpture: the mobile and the stabile. Composed of delicately balanced components that respond to air currents, Calder’s mobiles are graceful and poised. In contrast, stabiles are non-moving sculptures. This lesson is inspired by the mobile art of Alexander Calder and the theory of kinetic energy, with a focus on the principles of balance and movement. Preschool Art Camp
We will have a lot of fun doing storybook art with your younger artists in this class. We will read a book together and work on painting and cutting and gluing and drawing a project designed to go along with the book we read.

Famous Artist Study- Seurat/ pointillism
eiffel tower george seurat.11In this class we will study the life and work of Georges Seurat, French draftsman and painter (1859-1891). Georges Seurat is chiefly remembered as the pioneer of the Neo-Impressionist technique known as Pointillism, an approach associated with a softly flickering surface of small dots or color. We will learn this technique and use it to create our own pointillism painting. Artists will learn color theory and composition while creating their painting

Living Artist Study- Chuck Close
Charles Thomas "Chuck" Close is an American painter/artist and photographer who achieved fame as a photorealist, through his massive-scale portraits. Close is known for using creative and intricate patterns to portray a human portrait. We will study his work and create a still life painting inspired by his style of using detailed patterns to create an image.

Multicultural Art - Amate Bark Painting

Amate is a form of bark paper that has been manufactured in Mexico since the pre-Hispanic timesIn this class we will study the art of making paper out of bark and the history of Amate bark paintings. We will look at a variety of images to get inspired to create our own!

Drawing Class- Celtic Knots and Illuminated Lettering
Fees $36 all supplies included

In this class we will learn how to draw celtic knots- simple or complicated based on your level. We will also study the art of illuminated text and learn how to design our own. We will use a variety of tools including pencil, ink, colored pencil, and paint to design and embellish our art.

Session II

Multicultural Art- Moscow's Magnificent Domes
Fees $36 all supplies included

In this class we will research Russian architecture, which is found in Moscow and across the country. We will look at pictures of onion-shaped domes on buildings such as St. Basil’s Cathedral and discuss the designs and patterns found in the domes. We will create a diorama of a Russian skyline!

Drawing Class - Ledger Art
Fees $36 all supplies included

Nineteenth-century Plains Indian drawings have often been called “ledger” drawings because they were made with pencil, ink, and watercolor on pages of old ledger or account books. In this class we will learn more about the history of these drawings and look at many examples for inspiration before we create our own version of Ledger Art!

In this class we will learn drawing techniques using ink, such as stippling, crosshatch, creating value with line, etc. We will also learn a variety of watercolor techniques and use them to create beautiful background papers for our ink drawings. We will also add watercolor after we have created ink drawings. This is a great class if you like to doodle as well as if you are into realistic drawing. You will be free to explore using all of this information to create images or text or combinations. This kind of art can be used to create fine art works as well as card fronts or illustrations.

Realistic Grid Drawing Class

In this class we will learn a drawing technique that uses a grid overlay on a reference image that directly correlates with a grid on our drawing paper. This is an excellent way to control proportion and detail while drawing realistically. Learning to use this tool will also help you to more easily scale up a small reference image into any size you would like to make it. We will use drawing pencils and tools and increase our shading and drawing skills.

In this class we will explore artwork of people from the first nations of the Americas. We will learn about the culture, literature, and art of different tribes. Projects will include several mediums. We will draw, paint, weave, and create an instrument in paper mache!

Multicultural Art - Arts of Asia
Hokusai

In this class we will study the amazing art of Japanese artist, Hokusai. We will create our own painting in the style of Hokusai and turn it into a beautiful lantern. In addition we will take a look at Chinese dragon puppets! We will finish off by making our own dynamic puppet using paper mache clay.

Adult and Teen Drawing classes


Adult and Teen Drawing  

Class 1- Proportion and portraiture 
In this class we will focus on drawing skills and techniques like shading and blending as well as elements like line, value, and texture to help your drawing become more realistic. We will learn how proportion is key to drawing the human face and also focus on drawing eyes and hair.

Class 2- Pastel Chalk Drawing
In this class we will learn how to paint with chalk pastels. We will do a series of exercises to learn different techniques for drawing with chalks including blend
ing and layering. We will complete still life drawings as well as landscapes, including reflections in water.

Class 3- Watercolor Painting
