Studio Closing for now

To all of my amazing art families,
I will be closing my art studio this fall after 8 wonderful years of teaching you and your children.
I have accepted a full-time art teacher position with Lafayette School Corporation. I hope that in the future I will be able to offer some evening and weekend classes once I get settled into this new job- so keep an eye out for me.
It has been a tremendous blessing in my life to be able to get to know and work with all of your wonderful children. Thank you is not enough... I am so grateful.
Love,
Miss Aubrey

Multicultural Art: Sumi-e painting from East Asia
SUMI-E is the Japanese word for Black Ink Painting. East Asian Painting and writing developed together in ancient China using the same materials —brush and ink on paper. Emphasis is placed on the beauty of each individual stroke of the brush.  A great painting was judged on three elements: the calligraphy strokes, the words of the poetry and the ability of the painting strokes to capture the spirit (Ch’i) of nature rather than a photographic likeness. The artists of Japan, Korea and Malaysia learned from the Chinese and then developed their own versions of East Asian brush painting.
In this class, we will study Sumi-e and practice brush strokes.

Session I

Medieval Art- Illuminated manuscripts
"Before the invention of the printing press in Europe around 1455, all books were handwritten and decorated. The word manuscript is derived from the Latin words manus (hand) and scriptus, from scribere (to write). Illuminated, from the Latin illuminare (to light up), denotes the glow created by the radiant colors of the illustrations, as well as by real gold and silver. Illuminations took the form of decorated letters, borders, and independent figurative scenes, also called miniatures."
In this class we will study this art and create our own illuminations using a variety of media.

Medieval Art - Coat of Arms
credit

The first coat of arms was used to distinguish one knight from another. When a knight had on his full armor, including plate mail and helmet, even his friends couldn't recognize him. Because of this, knights began to paint symbols on their shields. They eventually began to put the symbol on their banner and the coat they wore over their armor. This is how it got the name "coat of arms".
In this class we will design our own coat of arms using symbols of things that are important to us and our families.
