Textile Painting - a study of Batik 
The art of decorating cloth in this way, using wax and dye, has been practiced for centuries. In Java, Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and some of the finest batik cloth in the world is still made there.
Students will study the way these beautiful textiles are created in Indonesia and then create a design of their own that will be transferred to fabric using glue rather than wax. Students will paint their fabric and then wash out the glue leaving them with a one of a kind piece of fabric.

Georgia O'Keeffe inspired acrylic painting class
Georgia O'Keeffe was an American artist. She was best known for her paintings of enlarged flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes. O'Keeffe has been recognized as the "Mother of American modernism"
Students will learn about O'Keeffe and her contributions to art history. We will learn about composition as we create our own painting in the cropped style O'Keefe used. Students will work with acrylic paint on canvas.

Friday, October 20 from 6:00-8:30pm
Fees = $25 per student or $45 per couple (dates or friends)


This is a great class for a date night, girls night out, or groups of friends to come to together and paint and have fun and go home with a finished painting.

Session I
Optical Illusion Drawing - a study of Yaacov Agam
Yaacov Agam is an Israeli sculptor and experimental artist best known for his contributions to optical and kinetic art. Artists will study the incredible art of Agam and create their own optical illusion using 2-3 of their own original drawings/paintings.

Heliographic Prints - a study of Henri Matisse
Sun Painting or Heliographic Art is a process whereby certain fabric paints are applied to fabric and while still wet, objects like stencils, leafs, feathers etc are placed onto the wet fabric. It is then placed in the sun. the outlines of the objects are transferred to the fabric. 
Artists will study the cut paper works of Matisse and use them as inspiration for their own cut paper stencils to create prints on canvas.

Session II
Clear Scratch Art Drawing - a study of M.C. Escher 
Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) is one of the world's most famous graphic artists. His art is enjoyed by millions of people all over the world. During his lifetime he made 448 lithographs, woodcuts and wood engravings and over 2000 drawings and sketches. We will study Escher's work and create our own art work using clear scratch art paper giving it the look of a woodcut print!

Paper Pulp Painting - a study of Denise Fleming
Denise Fleming won a Caldecott Honor for In the Small, Small Pond. She is the author and illustrator of over twenty picture books. Her illustrations are colorful paintings she creates by painting with paper pulp. In this class, artists will design and create their own paper pulp painting using tissue papers.

Session III
Ball Point Engraving Drawing
An engraving is a design that is worked into a surface using tools that create recessed, cut, or carved lines. The first engravings were created by stone-age artists on eggshells, bones, and rocks. In this class we will use a low tech method to create an engraving on illustration board as well as layers of color.

Session IV 

Book Making- 
Suminagashi paper covers and color field canvas covers 
*3 classes
Suminagashi or "floating ink" is the process of marbling plain paper with water and ink to transform it into something vibrant and colorful. It originated in Japan as early as the 12th century. Color field canvases are created by pouring thinned out acrylic paints onto canvas. Both methods result in unique colorful images that we will use as covers to journals and sketch books. These books would make great gifts for the upcoming holidays!

Screen Printing
*3 classes
In this class we will create our own stencils and learn the basics of screen printing. We will print our images onto pillowcases. Artists are welcome to bring other items to print on as well (canvas bags, t-shirts, fabric, etc) The art from this class will also make one of a kind gifts for your artist to give away!

2017 Summer Art Classes

Tuesday-Friday June 6-9

Batik

Metal tooling
Metal tooling is a centuries-old art in which a soft metal is worked with a rounded tool on the back side in order to create a raised design on the front. Mexican and South American artists call this art form repajado, and it is also referred to as repoussé or embossing.
Students will study the art from South America and create their own design that will be embossed on a metal sheet. We will mount our work and give it a patina finish as well!

Clay and basket fusion
Combine a clay pot with reeds to create a sculptural vessel that fuses two ancient techniques! Students will create a hand built clay bowl then we will add natural reed to the bowl and weave a basket like top. This vessel is a sculptural celebration of two ancient crafts “woven” into one!

Fiona French watercolor painting
Fiona French is a writer and illustrator of many children's books. She uses many different media in her illustrations. Students will study the art of Fiona French and create a unique watercolor painting using black glue to give it a stained glass look.

Drawing - Animals
Tuesdays January 17- February 21

In this class we will work on value, texture, and line to draw primarily horses and birds. We will work on getting proper proportions, showing musculature, and how to be successful drawing fur, and feathers!

For artists 8 and older

Watercolor- Nature
Tuesdays January 17-February 21

In this class we will work on gaining control of watercolor paint by learning several painting techniques. We will be working on a series of painting of plants, flowers, insects, and birds.

Drawing - chalk pastels

In this class we will draw with chalk pastels as we learn different drawing techniques from scumbling to crosshatch and become successful at using and layering color. We will learn how to use underpainting as we work through a series of tutorials in landscape drawing.

Multicultural Art - Maori Tribal Art
Tuesdays February 28-March 21 from 11:15-12:15 pm

In this class we will explore the artwork of the Maori Tribes of New Zealand! We will learn about Poi ball dancers and make our own Maori Poi and Ti Rakau sticks! We will also study the significance of Koru (the Maori word for the new unfurling fern frond) and create a multimedia drawing of our own. 

For artists 5 and older

Session II

Drawing - Still life drawing
Tuesdays April 4-25 from 10-11:00  am

In this class we will learn how to draw depth and and show natural lighting while using drawing pencils and stumps. We will do a series of fun still life set ups from legos to candy to more traditional still life set ups.

Multicultural Art - Mexican weaving and pinatas
Tuesdays April 4-25 from 11:15-12:15 pm

In this class we will study the art of Mexican woven blankets. We will create a set of beautiful woven coasters! We will also learn all about Cinco De Mayo and create our own personal pinatas.

Session III

Drawing- Colored Pencils
Tuesdays May 2-23 from 10-11:00 am

In this class we will learn how to use prismacolor colored pencils. We will learn basic drawing techniques and blending as we do a series of abstract and realistic drawing exercises.

Multicultural Art- Central American Metal Tooling
Tuesdays May 2-23 from 11:15-12:15 pm

In this class we will study the metal art of ancient Central America and create our own design inspired by their artwork. We will transfer this design onto metal tooling sheets creating a relief image. Finally, we will take the metal art we have created and turn it into the cover for a journal!
